Camping in a Dust Storm – Alamogordo, NM
We’ve certainly gotten better at finding great, affordable (read: free) boondocking spots since our first attempt. In Texas, we lucked out at a few spots by camping during the off season with no charge!
But one of our favorite spots we’ve boondocked in the RV has been in Alamogordo, NM, just outside of the White Sands National Monument. It was a little difficult to get to, and very easy to miss, but we made it and caught a great sunset in the midst of a duststorm.
Through some quick searching, we came across this mentioned boondocking site, and decided to check it out. It was perfect – just one mile east of the White Sands National Monument, which we planned to visit the next day. The entrance is a little suspect at first – a dried up lake sits right at the road, and the drive up is steep and curvy. But once on the gravel road inside, we were good to go!
How funny is that sign? We were cracking up when reading it. Since then, we’ve seen a few other “Installation Commander” signs throughout the U.S.!
Our gorgeous, private lagoon for the evening – perfect for viewing a duststorm!
And I promise – we do occasionally get some work done on the road! Writing by a lagoon at sunset is pretty ideal.
I loved watching the duststorm. We drove in during the middle of it, which felt very end-of-days. After we parked, the storm began to part right where the sun was setting – revealing a mountain range we hadn’t seen.
And Cory’s favorite part of the campsite? The proximity to the nearby Holloman Air Force Base. While planes flying overhead may be a detractor to some, for Cory it only adds to the camping site! He was pretty excited to watch the planes come in.
I wish we could have stayed another night or two! But we packed up in the morning, and headed over to White Sands. Here’s a preview of the next post coming up…. 🙂
Check back tomorrow for more of our AMAZING time in White Sands!

I’m so glad I read this right before the 4th. Totally dressing up as an Installation Commander.
Such a patriotic costume! 🙂
